Fall hits and we all start stacking clothes on our bodies, and by layer three a lot of us look less cute and more upholstered. It happens to everybody. But the fix is not taking layers off. It is being smarter about which ones go together.
Here is the rule that fixes it instantly. Contrast. Slim next to loose. Structured next to soft. Cropped next to long. When every layer is the same shape and the same weight you just look thick. When the layers are a little bit at war with each other, you look like you meant it. That is it. That is the trick.
Three combos we are personally obsessed with. First, a blazer over a sweater with jeans and heels. Sounds basic. Is not basic. A structured blazer on top of something soft does something for your whole silhouette, and the heel keeps it from looking like you are headed to a meeting. This is the girls night out fit and you probably already own most of it.
Second, a cute dress with a distressed denim jacket over it. And then the part that actually ate: wear a scarf as a necklace. Loop it through itself like a long necklace, then tie it off to the SIDE instead of the middle. That one little off center knot is the whole outfit. People will ask. Let them wonder.
Third, a skirt with leggings under it, a big chunky sweater on top, and low combat boots. Warm, comfortable, and the proportions just work because the chunky top balances out the skinny leg. You can wear this to run errands and then straight to dinner and nobody will know it was one outfit all day.
Once your shapes are right, get weird with color, because that is what makes people actually stop scrolling. Sky blue with chocolate brown is everywhere right now and somehow reads as a neutral. Olive with a real tomato red is so good. Ecru, sky blue and cognac together is soft and rich at the same time. And butter yellow with chocolate brown is unexpectedly gorgeous on basically everyone.
Now here is the math nobody mentions. Layering means pieces, and pieces get expensive fast at full price. Ours run about 70% off retail, new stuff lands every day, and almost none of it repeats, so that blazer or that scarf is probably the only one in the building.
And while you are digging through your own closet, clock what is just sitting there. If you have nicer labels and designer you are not touching, bring it in. We price designer individually and pay a premium for the good stuff. Cash on the spot, or 20% more in store credit if you would rather turn it into your next layer.
