Summer Survival Hacks From Someone Who's Done a LOT of Beach Days

We've been around the block on summer hangs and we have some THOUGHTS. Most of what people stress about for beach days, cookouts, and road trips is honestly unnecessary, and the stuff that actually matters is way simpler than you think. Let us save you some time and some sanity.

First hack and the one nobody talks about enough. Dryer sheets in the beach bag. Toss two unused dryer sheets in the bottom of your bag before you leave the house. When you get home, the sand basically jumps off your towels and clothes. Sand and dryer sheets are mortal enemies. We don't make the rules.

Second hack. Stop using a cute open tote at the beach. We see you. We've been you. But the open tote is a sand magnet and your phone is gonna pay the price. Get a canvas bag with a zip top. Put a small zip pouch inside for wet swimsuits. Your phone stays clean. Your dry stuff stays dry. Your back doesn't break carrying soaking towels home in a Target bag.

Third hack and this one is for the cookouts. Make everything ahead. Like, EVERYTHING. The day of the cookout you should be doing nothing but grilling, putting things on a plate, and saying hi to people. If you're sweating in the kitchen at 4pm, you did it wrong. Pasta salad? Day before. Potato salad? Day before. Marinate the meat? Day before. Veggies cut and ready? Day before. Set yourself up to win.

Fourth hack. If you're bringing something to someone else's cookout instead of hosting, bring the dish that survives the car ride. A pasta salad in a sealed container. A fruit salad with a squeeze of lime to keep it from going brown. A pan of brownies. A good bag of chips with a small container of homemade dip. Skip the deviled eggs that need to stay ice cold. Skip the green salad that wilts in 12 minutes. Read the room.

Fifth hack and it's for day trips and the shore drive. Frozen water bottles in the cooler instead of bagged ice. They do the chilling AND they're the cold drinks for the ride home. No melted ice swamp at the bottom of your cooler. No paying $4 for a Wawa drink at the rest stop. You're welcome.

Sixth hack. Pack snacks that don't betray you. Pretzels, hard fruit, crackers, granola bars, jerky. Nothing that melts. Nothing that bruises. Save the M&Ms for after you get home.

Seventh hack and we'll close it out here. Whatever you wear has to be EASY. Cookout in stiff jeans? You'll regret it by 4pm. Beach in a tight maxi dress? You'll regret it the second you sit on a beach chair. Easy knits, linen, breezy tops, denim shorts that don't dig in. The whole point of summer is comfort that still looks cute, and that's basically our entire personality at the Springfield store. Pop in this week, the spring and summer arrivals are stacked and they're priced like 70% off retail because that's just how we do.

Have the summer you actually want. Use the hacks. Save your sanity. We'll be here when you need an easy fit for the next beach day.
